The Human Rights Commttee,
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights,
The special Repporter on extra judical, summery or arbitrary executions
Teheran, November 2002
More than four years have passed since the murder of Parvaneh and Dariush Forouhar – the murder of two people who spent their lives fighting for democracy, social justice and the independence of their homeland.
A few days after the assassination of Parvaneh and Dariush Forouhar, the writers Mohammad Mokhtari and Mohammad Jafar Pooyandeh were also murdered.
These extra judicial executions, which have come to be known as the “chain of murders”, constituted yet another surge in the endless sequence of crimes committed against dissidents since the founding of the Islamic Republic. These crimes have left deep wounds.
Vehement public reaction to the “chain of murders”, and worldwide protests against them, initially aroused hopes that these murders might eventually be solved. Yet in spite of the enormous public interest and the indefatigable efforts of many individuals and political organisations, not to mention the families of the victims themselves, those responsible have never been identified. Cover-ups and political spin have ensured that the crimes remain unsolved to this day.
We, the surviving members of the Forouhar, Mokhtari and Pooyandeh families, have lost all confidence in the judicial authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In spite of all the promises and assurances given by those politically responsible to investigate the crimes, nothing has been done. For this reason, we now turn to the Human Rights Commission of the United Nations. The crimes that have been committed in Iran are crimes against humanity. Solving them is an international issue.
